Little State – Big Problems
Ever since the smallest state in the country became the only sports betting outlet problems have been mounting:
- paying $900,000 on sports betting in February, mostly Super Bowl bets, leaving the state with $150,000, far below the expected $11.5 million projected
- released a mobile sports app for use through both casinos in July, only to face a possible lawsuit considering mobile sports betting is unconstitutional.
- Twin River executives have mounted a campaign against Gov. Gina Raimondo’s proposal to extend the current contract between the state and IGT. Mohegan Sun ranked No. 1 in USA Today’s list of 10 best casino hotels in America for the second time in a row. Nearby Foxwoods Resort Casino ranked No. 2. Encore will surely have something to say about that next year.
Hollywood Bangor not much of a Bang
Penn National’s Hollywood Casino, Hotel and Raceway reminds me of all those mosiers on the Vegas Strip – slowly going somewhere, who knows, while so many pass them by. Here’s the recent trip report “Hollywood Bangor Hasn’t Been Updated in Years”
A Case of the Dropsies – September Revenue
Expected revenues for New England casinos continue to fall except for one – Encore. And while table reports are doing very well at EBH, slots are dramatically lower than expected. The entire area is projecting saturation numbers.
Twin River Casino saw table games revenue in Lincoln tumble 40% in August, more than the 34% in July. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun reported declines of 10% from last year. Meanwhile, Maine’s two casinos reported record years so far, with Oxford Casino Hotel boasting large increases with the addition of a 177-room hotel and expanded casino floor.
So I think we under-estimated that level of loyalty and what it would take for those customers to give us a shot.

MGM Springfield Miscalculates Loyalty
MGM’s Springfield “Urban Casino” project underestimated the loyalty factor to other competing casinos. Revenue estimates were well below the $412 million projections one year later.
Casino.Org reported “This market has some really strong competitors that have been in the market for 20-plus years,” Mike Mathis, head of MGM Springfield, said in recent media interviews reports the Hartford Courant. “So I think we under-estimated that level of loyalty and what it would take for those customers to give us a shot.”

Halloween in New England

- Encore Boston Harbor, MA – The new guy in New England isn’t new to big celebrations, starting with Halloween. Their B-52s Halloween Bash will take place on that Thursday, October 31, 2019. The band in on their first tour since 2015 and are preparing a high-profile documentary and their first official book. Doors open: 6:30 p.m. / Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Tickets starting at $59.50
- MGM Springfield, MA – MGM Springfield will host Halloween-themed events including “Flick or Treat,” a series of spooky Halloween movies. Beginning on Sunday, Oct. 28, MGM Springfield will play four scary films outside on Armory Square,7 p.m. to 10 p.m., leading up to Halloween night. They are free and open to the public. For visitors 21 and over, Commonwealth Bar and Lounge will transform on Saturday, Oct. 27 into “Wealth-O-Ween.”Guests will have the opportunity to compete in a sexy costume contest for the chance to win $5,000 in cash prizes. The event will start at 9 p.m. and there is no cover charge to enter.
