Deluxe King Hotel Room At The D Las Vegas
One of the best reasons to stay at a hotel in downtown Las Vegas is the price. The standard (Deluxe King) room on a recent mid-week visit to The D Las Vegas costs $19. When you add the $22.40 resort fee and taxes the total price of the room was around $45 for the night. The Deluxe King room was simple, clean, spacious and had a renovated bathroom.
Note: The resort fee as of July 2018 is $28.25 and includes “free” self parking. The full terms and conditions of the fee: “Resort Fee will include complimentary parking, In-Room high speed Wi-Fi, grant entry to the pool area and fitness center, $10 off all shows at the D Showroom, $5 coupon to the D Grill, 10% discount to Zingerman’s coffee stand, as well as both local and toll-free calls.”
If you’re going look for a quick rating the Deluxe King hotel room at The D is on the better side of average and better than you probably expect for a basic room in downtown Las Vegas. When The D opened on the bones of Fitzgerald’s Hotel in 2012 all of the rooms received a simple, clean and modern makeover. While the main living area of the rooms received most of the attention but the entire room updates weren’t complete.
The renovations to The D hotel rooms continued as the bathrooms have slowly been renovated and modernized. Today, the new bathrooms make this more than just a nice room. In fact, the powerful shower, modern sink and amenities make this one of the best hotel rooms in downtown Las Vegas.
Living Area
When entering the room there were a couple of things that stood out. That red accent wall behind the bed might normally be distracting but it works nicely with the overall decor of the room, hotel and casino. The other thing that stood out was the 1980’s style stand-alone air conditioning unit. It looks old but kept the room perfectly cool. Light sleepers should note that the air conditioning unit was louder than you’d want.
The room is simple in design and very spacious with only one king bed. There’s a good amount of room for 2 queen beds but the room is a little tighter with the addition of the second bed. The decreased seating area in the queen room isn’t optimal but the room never feels small regardless of configuration.
When I travel alone I usually take a little time during the afternoon for work. The seating area was so comfortable that I decided to take calls and work from the lounge chairs instead of the desk. The real benefit of sitting that far away from the desk is that I could actually see the TV which is right above the desk work area.
Older hotel rooms can sometimes be a pain for current technology since outlets used to be hidden from plain sight. One of the easiest ways to modernize an old hotel room is to add lamps that have outlets. The bedside lamp at The D has outlets to make charging a mobile device easy. In this case, a laptop needed a charge and at night it was an iPhone. This isn’t an amenity you’ll find in every downtown Las Vegas hotel and it’s important for anyone with a smartphone. It was nice not to need my 6-foot travel charging cord for a change.
Unfortunately, the wifi speed in the hotel room went from okay to crawling during my 24-hour visit. Thankfully I wasn’t doing any heavy lifting with work that needed a high-speed connection. I was able to download podcasts and stream audio at the okay speed but not when the wifi speed was slow. Paying for wifi is forced on you with the resort fee so it should never be crawling. Sadly, this is a problem at many different hotels in Las Vegas.
The bed at The D provided one of the best nights of sleep I’d had in awhile. The mattress was firm but comfortable. Unlike some other hotels in Las Vegas (ehem, Caesars), the pillows were all the same size and density. The five balanced pillows were comfortable and more than ample for a solo night of travel. Again, the outlets included in the lamps were perfect for a little morning social media check while watching ESPN in the bed.
Bathroom
I’ve stayed at The D a few times and this was the first time in one of the renovated bathrooms. The modern vanity is nice but there was only one sink. This might be an issue for couples but it was fine for a solo trip. There was nothing fancy about the vanity but its modern design makes you feel as though the room is in the hip and modern #DTLV (Downtown Las Vegas) and not “Old Vegas.” This is an important note as some other hotel room bathrooms in downtown Las Vegas feel very dated. This kind of comfort is a reason for me to want to stay at The D instead of other hotels in downtown Las Vegas.
The artwork in the hotel rooms at The D isn’t fancy. The whimsy of craps dice above the toilet made me laugh. I hope this was done on purpose. You can purchase the artwork at The D Shop in the casino or online.
In Las Vegas, more than anywhere else, the most important feature in a hotel room (to me) is the shower. A good shower is always important but there’s something about washing away the previous night and starting fresh that really feels more important in Las Vegas. The shower was one of the strongest anywhere in Las Vegas. It felt so good that I stayed twice as long as usual.
The nifty hole in the glass is a nice feature so you don’t have to stand inside the shower to find the right water temperature. This isn’t something you see in most basic hotel rooms and is an unexpected amenity to find in “old Vegas.”
Conclusion
The Deluxe King room at The D Las Vegas is one of the nicer hotel rooms in downtown Las Vegas. This isn’t a lavish, luxury hotel room that you might expect on the Vegas Strip. However, the room at The D is clean, modern and spacious. For comparison, the room rivals the mid-range hotels on the Vegas Strip.
The only real downside of staying and working at The D was that the wifi speed fluctuated from okay to unusable. Given other hotel options in downtown Las Vegas at similar prices, I’ve always stayed at The D and that won’t stop anytime soon.

Thanks. I felt the same way about the casino. The only thing missing is early coffee. The coffee shop doesn’t open until 8. I’m on my 2nd or 3rd cup by then. Haha.
I thought it odd that the only place I could get an early cup of coffee was at the McDonald’s there.
The line at 7am was out the door when I was there. We ended up going to the Fremont for Dunkin Donuts.

Nice to see the good job they’ve done on the new bathrooms. Stayed in a room there last year and the old fashioned bathroom (although clean) was at odds with the modern design of the rest of the room.
I think the bathrooms may still be in the process of being renovated. Just ask for a new bathroom when checking in to make sure.
I stayed in that room. The shower is excellent. The AC didn’t seem to work right, so I called Engineering, and someone came up immediately to replace the air filter. It was so clogged with dust and dirt, air couldn’t get through. Worked fine after that, and I told The D they needed to add the AC filters to their checklists. I will definitely return.
Interesting note about the AC filters. That should be a part of any monthly checklist. They’re cheap to purchase and reduce operating costs.

Wish they wouldn’t have decimated their VP pay tables. The D and Golden Gate now have the worst VP downtown. Not expecting it improve at the renovated Vegas Club.
I’ll be happy as long as they keep the 8/5 progressive VP at Vue Bar. 🙂
