The News

New Hampshire Joining the Sports Betting Frenzy

For two decades, Senator D’Allesandro has been trying to pass a bill to allow for two casinos in one of the few states left that doesn’t have casino gambling, only to have the House repeatedly reject it. For years, NH has had to be content with Lottery Keno and numerous Card Rooms.(see our post New Hampshire Adds a New…….Casino?) Gov. Chris Sununu recently voiced his support for legislation that would make betting on sports games legal under the supervision of the state’s lottery commission.

The bill would legalize betting on professional sports and the majority of Division I college sports. Games involving New Hampshire colleges would be excluded. “Opening New Hampshire to legalized sports betting would bring in more than $10 million in additional revenue,” the governor’s office said. Now, both the Senate and the House have each passed a bill approving sports betting. The House bill authorizes sports betting to be run by the New Hampshire Lottery Commission while the Senate bill includes casino expansion with sports betting at the casinos and through an “online sports pool operator.”

More New Hampshire News – Seabrook Track could experience rennaisance

Gary Trask of Casino City Times claims the old Seabrook Greyhound Park, which hosts only simulcast racing and a struggling poker room these days, may see a new life in the next few years.  Combined with the renewed interest in two casinos by the Senate, Trask wrote “The new sense of optimism follows the announcement in late January that Nevada-based Eureka Casino Resort had purchased the property.

Not only does the 100% employee -owned company bring a grand vision and extensive experience in the casino/gaming industry (it owns and operates Eureka Casino in Las Vegas and Eureka Casino Resort in Mesquite), but the two executives leading the charge have local ties, so the transaction was more than simply a business decision.”

While keeping the property open for business, construction began in February. Last month, the Greyhound Casino & Tavern was unveiled, featuring a very comfortable “ski lodge” type of feel. The plans for the renovations in the non-smoking venue would feature a granite bar and high-top tables along with a full “pub style” menu, as well as six brand new poker tables; 11 table games featuring the likes of blackjack, Mississippi Stud and Three Card Poker; and two roulette tables.

Rhode Island Sports Betting results Disappointing

Rhode Island became the eighth state to offer sports betting in 2018 which gave high hopes at being the first state in New England to offer it. Casino gain at Twin River & Tiverton casinos was not expected to be huge because of the large chunk going to the state – 51 percent. IGT,  functioning as the partner of the lottery and casinos to help operate sports betting, received  32 percent. The casinos split the 17 percent left.

February was not a kind month, bringing a loss of $900,000 at the casinos sports books. CardPlayer.com’s Steve Schult reported “The total handle for the month was about $20.7 million, which was good – but the books paid out a whopping $21.6 million, which was bad.”

In an effort to increase sports betting profits and raise tax revenue, Rhode Island quickly passed a mobile sports betting bill, which was signed by Gov. Gina Raimondo last week.” It will allow Twin River Casinos to operate mobile apps that will allow bettors to place a bet from their phone as long as they are located within the state’s borders.”

MGC Releases Review of Wynn Resort’s actions as Encore releases Hotel & Dining News

“Executives at Wynn Resorts concealed allegations of sexual misconduct against company founder Steve Wynn for years.” That was what the long-awaited report by Massachusetts Gaming Commission said, and didn’t suggest any action in their their 200-page report about the fate of the company’s Massachusetts casino license or its nearly completed casino slated to open in June.

Months of discussion about keeping the Boston area license have fawned many rumors about MGM & Mohegan Sun taking the almost completed $3 billion Boston-area resort. But it concludes by saying recent reforms touted by the company — notably the resignation of Steve Wynn as CEO and the ousting of every official who knew about the allegations but failed to report them — do not “erase the fact that the corporate failures revealed in this investigation are significant, repetitive and reflective of the company’s historical governance practices.”

With the property about to open, we doubt that Wynn Resorts will lose the license, but will probably follow the punishment presented in Nevada – fining casino mogul Steve Wynn’s former company a record $20 million for failing to investigate claims of sexual misconduct made against him before he resigned a year ago.

Encore Boston Harbor opens June 2019

The Wynn Resorts integrated casino resort will hold its grand opening celebration on Sunday, June 23. Rooms for the first night start at $777 for a Premier King room, which at 650 square foot is billed as the largest standard hotel room in Boston, and even all of New England.  It will open an upscale steakhouse within its $2.6 billion resort, featuring waterfront views and the most unique steak program in New England. ‘Rare Steakhouse’ will also highlight exquisite and hard-to-find bourbon and scotch selections, as well as a thoughtful offering of local distilled spirits and craft beers.

NEWS SHORTS

Connecticut – Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE) has signed an agreement with Kambi Group plc to provide online and on-property betting products to MGE’s signature U.S. integrated entertainment resort located in Connecticut. MGE selected Kambi in part due to its track-record of lawful and responsible delivery in the U.S., including the quality and flexibility of its sports wagering products, trading and risk management capabilities and unrivaled speed to market – both online and on-property.

Maine – Lawmakers are considering a proposal that would allow the tribes to jointly operate a casino with slot machines at an undetermined location at least 50 miles from either the Bangor or Oxford County casinos. The Passamaquoddy representative to the Legislature, Rena Newell, urged members of the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee to support the bill and help repair the poor relations between the tribes and the state.

Massachusetts – MGM Resorts reached an agreement with the Boston Red Sox to become the baseball team’s “official and exclusive resort casino,” stealing the “Green Monsta” logo space from Foxwoods. The press release also mentioned that “VIP gameday hospitality” will be occurring at Fenway Park and that MGM Resorts shall now be known as the “official and exclusive resort casino of the Boston Red Sox.” In addition, the club’s annual Winter Weekend will head west to Springfield, to be held next January and subsequent Januarys at the MGM Springfield casino, which were always sold out at Foxwoods weeks in advance.
