Wow, what a week in Las Vegas. Sometimes it’s true, where there’s smoke there’s fire. I thought there would be a big announcement coming from Wynn Resorts and there most certainly was a big announcement. I’m not going to rehash everything but the entire week was filled with news from Wynn Resorts and Steve Wynn himself.
Wynn West Announced
On Monday’s Wynn Resorts earnings call, Steve Wynn announced plans to build a 4th hotel tower across the street in front of Trump Tower and next to the Fashion Show Mall. You can read every detail revealed about Wynn West here. We reveal a lot of information that you won’t find anywhere else.
Wynn Paradise Park Will Run On 100% Renewable Energy
Wynn Paradise Park will operate entirely on renewable energy sourced from a new 160-acre solar energy facility in Fallon, Nevada. No, Wynn Las Vegas is not placing a solar array on their land or existing buildings. According to the press release this is the largest percentage of renewable energy used by any resort in Las Vegas, and an industry first for a gaming operator in Nevada.
Steve Wynn Accused of Sexual Misconduct
I write about casinos and gambling but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this. You can read about it here. Wynn Resorts stock plummeted. Wynn Resorts Board Of Directors is launching an investigation. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is also launching an investigation and Nevada will keep tabs on the situation. I’m not going to speculate on the future of the company because there’s bound to be more information.
I’m sure I missed some things but there’s more Vegas news to get to. Since there’s no natural segue so I’m going to dive back into it.
Super Bowl Week!
The two-week break between the AFC and NFC Championship games and Super Bowl is brutal for football fans. This two week period just sort of drags on unless you follow the sports betting angles. Earlier this week, there was a multi-million dollar wager placed on the Philadelphia Eagles with an MGM Resorts property. There have been 5 and 6 figure wagers placed on the Eagles during the week but nothing else approaching the size this bet.
As the week was coming to a close, the sportsbooks released their proposition bets for the Super Bowl. Most Las Vegas casinos have between 200 and 400 prop bets available. I wrote about Super Bowl prop bets here. You can see the William Hill package with more than 900 wagering options here.
I already bet the Eagles moneyline for the third game in a row. I’ll add some prop bets in during the week. WHO YA GOT?!
Town Square Adding Aloft And Element Hotels
According to Eater Vegas, the massive shopping center south of Mandalay Bay on Las Vegas Boulevard will be adding two small hotels. This is some kind of deal since this will add two more Starwood Hotels close to the action on the Vegas Strip.
The location is also relatively close to the football stadium being built for the Las Vegas Raiders. The hotels will be less than a 5-minute car ride from Vegas Strip casinos and the football stadium. More SPG hotels near the action on the Vegas Strip can only be a good thing for travelers.
Sands/MSG Arena “Soft Announcement”
The news of Las Vegas Sands building an arena behind The Venetian and The Palazzo is about a year old. However, it looks as though we’re finally going to see and hear the plans soon. The Las Vegas Sun says the company will share plans in February and March.
As a sports fan I had to sift through websites and writers wondering why Las Vegas needs another sports arena. Well, this isn’t intended to be home to a sports team. Chill out. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reminds us that this is intended to be a music and performance venue – not a sports venue.
Uber And Lyft Airport Pickups Almost Doubled In 2017
Lost in the news about taxi pickups dropping last year at McCarran Airport was the news about how well the ride hailing services performed. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Uber and Lyft made 1.97 million pickups at McCarran Airport last year. That was a massive increase of 90.8% from 2016.
Between all car services (Uber, Lyft, Taxi) there was a total of 5.4 million pickups at McCarran Airport last year. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Uber and Lyft picking up more passengers than taxis at the airport by the end of 2018. The increase might not be so large but it doesn’t have to be.
Related, McCarran Airport saw a record number of passengers in 2017. Read more here.
Airbnb Business In Las Vegas Nearly Doubled In 2017
I wasn’t able to fit this in last week, but Airbnb had 500,000 bookings in Las Vegas for 2017. That’s nearly double the 260,000 they saw in 2016. Between casino-hotel fees and family travel, there are plenty reasons for people to look for non-casino housing in Las Vegas. Expect the Airbnb trend to continue like the ride hailing companies. You can read more here. (For those interested, Airbnb sign-up invitation.)
Last year I wrote about another reason for visitors to look into Airbnb for a Vegas Vacation. Many people want to enjoy legal marijuana but can’t legally smoke the pot in casinos or hotels. Airbnb has a host of “420 friendly” and smoke friendly homes and rooms available. It remains a great option if you’d like to buy and legally smoke marijuana.
