Mexico City has one of the biggest and most up-and-coming nightlife scenes in the world. From world-class restaurants to unique hipster bars and nightclubs, this city has it all. With so many options to choose from, it’s hard to find the best spots to spend your precious nights in Mexico City. That’s why I’ve put together this collection of the most unusual hipster bars in the city.
Jules Basement
Walking into Jules Basement is a little like entering Narnia but colder. To get into this amazing ‘speakeasy’ style bar you have to walk through a fridge door at the back of a little restaurant called La Surtidora. Once inside this secret establishment you are met with the ultra chic and totally abstract decor. Think chrome fixtures, angular shapes, glass skulls and black and white as far as the eye can see. The fantastic design of this bar isn’t its only plus. Jules Basement boasts some of the most decadent and delicious cocktails of the entire city. Jay Keuhner, a famous Mexican mixologist, will keep your taste buds dancing all night long with his fantastic array of liquid delights. When in Jules’ you must try the house specialty, the Falda Escosesa cocktail.
If it’s entertainment you’re looking for, then Jules Basement won’t disappoint! Throughout the week you can always find something exciting going down behind the fridge. Mixology lessons, live jazz bands, world-class DJs and stand-up comedy can all be found at Jules’.
Wallace Whiskey Bar
Voted the best whiskey bar in Mexico City for a reason, Wallace Whiskey Bar has an outstanding collection of over 150 different labels. Whether you are a whiskey connoisseur or a total beginner, the head barman Marcos will share every drop of his whiskey wisdom with you. While in Wallace Whiskey Bar you must try the house speciality: The Wallace, a delicate mixture of whiskey, ginger and cucumber, perfect for refreshing after a long day in the city. For those of you who don’t have the taste for whiskey, the bar also offers a wide selection of local and imported beers. If you get a little peckish after all that drinking, you can order from their traditional pub menu. Delicious fish and chips, a good old steak, or the overflowing Wallace Burger will all hit the spot.
However, Wallace Whiskey bar isn’t all about the drinks. Each night you can sit back in the old movie theatre seats, or cosy up in one of the hidden booths and listen to the amazing funk, jazz and blues bands that grace the stage at Wallace. If you’re feeling a little competitive, you can always head up to the second floor and enjoy a game of pool or darts.

One of the most sought-after and trendy areas in Mexico City is the Condesa District, and Condesa DF is at the heart of the action. Situated on top of the fabulous boutique hotel, the Condesa DF terrace bar has some of the most amazing views of the area. Inspired by the extravagant French culture, this chic hipster bar is dedicated solely to absinthe. You first enter Artemisia on the first floor, their restaurant, where you can chow down on their French gastronomic eccentricities. Simple raw food with the Artemisia flare is their speciality. Once you have enjoyed your delicious meal you can request an invitation to the next level, the absinthe bar. To enter the bar you must meet a very select set of criteria, and entrance is often by invitation only.
Once inside the exclusive bar, you can enjoy all the delights of the green fairy herself. Artemisia has their own custom blended absinth, specially made and imported from France. Allow the award-winning bartenders to transport you to another world with their amazing absinthe cocktails. If you aren’t in the mood for such a strong flavour, then the seasonal drinks made with prized gin, mezcal, bourbon and scotch will surely win you over.
Kommä
The second you walk into Kommä you feel like you have lost your mind. The white wash walls splattered with neon lights, and covered with manic neon graffiti, mixed with the entrancing house music will totally captivate you as soon as your feet hit the concrete floor. But the true masterpiece of this insane space is down the spiral staircase, inside a spaceship. On this level, you will find yourself totally surrounded by lights and wired and loud pulsating music that will seduce anyone who enters. Pair these surroundings with the devilishly delicious mix of mezcal cocktails, and you are in for one hell of a night.
Kommä is the mind-child of the young entrepreneurs Ready to Die, as they boldly push the boundaries to redefine the bar-nightclub experience. Every night they pick the best house, techno and disco DJs from the area, whose presence is unmistakable known from the moment you reach the front door. Some believe Kommä is the beginning of a new wave of nightlife and some believe it’s just an insanely cool bar, either way, there’s no disagreement on the bar’s amazing decor, music and addictive atmosphere.
