NETG SAYS WYNN WILL KEEP LICENSE
Encore Boston Harbor in the biggest and most costly building project in Massachusetts to date. It seems to that completion is going at a feverish pace at the Everett, MA property. But, controversy continues to swirl. It recently tweeted that “reservations are coming later this year” for the $2.4 billion gaming resort now under construction in Everett — despite the fact that the approval process is far from complete. The “cart before horse?” We’ll see as Massachusetts gambling regulators are still finalizing the results of their investigation into the suitability of Wynn Resorts Ltd. that will own and operate Encore Boston Harbor, to hold a gaming license in Massachusetts. So why the concern? Well…..
Point 1 – A federal jury acquitted three men accused of trying to hide a convicted felon’s ownership stake in land Wynn Resorts wants is developing into Encore Boston Harbor. Prosecutors alleged that the three men tried to conceal the main defendant Charles Lightbody’s stake in waterfront land by forging property and bank records to make it look like Lightbody — a reputed mob associate and felon — was no longer a co-owner. The state’s casino law bars felons from profiting from gambling operations. Strike one……
Point 2 – Meanwhile, Mohegan Sun has been arguing in a 3-year-old lawsuit that the Massachusetts Gaming Commission illegally favored Wynn Resorts when it awarded Wynn the Boston-area casino license after a vetting process that began in 2013. Jon Keller, an influential political commentator in Massachusetts said, “it was pretty clear to me and others that [they] were in love with the glitz and glamour of Steve Wynn.” In September 2014, the commission chose Wynn Resorts’ Everett proposal over Mohegan Sun’s plan to build a resort casino in Revere adjacent to the Suffolk Downs racetrack. Mohegan Sun’s legal claim stems from its status to intervene in a suit brought by the City of Revere, a labor union representing Suffolk Downs workers and several private citizens. The suit was dismissed in court, but the judge suggested that Mohegan Sun pursue the MGC. The MGC considered Mohegan Sun’s proposal to be going on the offensive, only to keep hold of their “empire” in southeastern New England.
Ouch! – Mohegan Sun – a swing and a miss.
Point 3 – Steve Wynn – the architect of the Vegas Strip – was charged with sexual harassment. This Massachusetts Gaming Commission investigation is nearing conclusion but the commission must be weighing what they do if the findings are bad for Wynn … and according to Forbes writer Walter Pavlo “they will be bad.” Stee-rike two!
Point 4 – MGC chairman Stephen Crosby resigned. Crosby has retired amid more allegations of bias in the MGC’s choosing of Wynn’s license proposal. and now the remaining members of the Gaming Commission find themselves trying to decide whether Wynn Resorts, in the wake of the serious allegations of sexual misconduct against Steve Wynn, remains suitable to hold on to its casino license. Stephen Crosby has been the MGC rock of strength since the beginning. Will the lack of Crosby’s leadership help Encore continue as is, or will the remaining four board members still be able to be decisive? Will we see STRIKE THREE?
To be honest, I can’t even imagine a change in Encore Boston Harbor. Too many jobs, to much need for glitz in the Boston area and let’s face it, it will do an immense business. I’ve said it before and I repeat – Encore Boston Harbor will be the jewel of the New England casino landscape.

Sports Betting Will Appear in Rhode Island Next
Rhode Island is going to allow sports books at both casinos in Lincoln and Tiverton, however, people must place their bets in person. This is different from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, which allow online sports books. Tom Mooney, Providence Journal Staff Writer, reported that “Legal sports gambling is still several weeks away in Rhode Island. State officials are now looking at the middle of next month before sports wagering begins at Twin River casinos in Lincoln and Tiverton.” Sports betting was originally to start by Oct. 1, but negotiations among multiple partners “took longer than expected,” Paul Grimaldi, spokesman for the Department of Revenue, said.

TWIN RIVER Casino HOTEL OPEN
According to TR staff, “The hotel’s 136 guest rooms and suites are decorated with blue and teal hues, offering a tranquil seaside ambiance.” Offerings include deluxe king, deluxe queen, convertible king and handicap accessible queen and king packages. All of the rooms feature a 49-inch Samsung TV, wireless internet and other amenities. Hotel amenities include an indoor pool area with a stone fireplace, fitness center, business conference room and rentable outdoor patio area. Third CT Casino Still Alive?
At the recent G2E in Las Vegas, Butler said at the recent Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas “The adverse ruling by a federal judge in the tribe’s suit against the federal Department of the Interior simply closes one avenue to getting the casino’s doors open.” See Mashantucket Pequot tribe challenges court ruling on E. Butler said he expects quick action after the new governor, legislature and attorney general take office on the third casino and on sports betting. “Both are key elements in maintaining the competitive position of Connecticut’s gaming industry, protecting the industry is a win-win for the state and the tribes.”
