After the barber the other day, I finally wandered into a store I must have passed dozens of times on Oude Spiegelstraat, one of the famous shopping streets that compose The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) in Amsterdam Centrum. This is one of my favorite and perhaps coolest, wackiest and most fun shopping and dining areas in all of Amsterdam. You can find more details and a description of stores, restaurants and cafés on this (the official) and this website.
EVEN AFTER 402 YEARS….
De 9 Straatjes stands for nine cosy and picturesque shopping streets. In the middle of the World Heritage Canal Belt. Just a few steps behind Dam Square. Or on the way from the Rijksmuseum to Anne Frank House.
This delightful neighborhood is brimming with unique shops, charming eateries and great ambience. Anyone spending an afternoon here is sure to take home unexpected finds.
The six bigger streets (Reestraat, Hartenstraat, Berenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Runstraat and Huidenstraat) refer to the trade in animal skins for the leather industry.
They offer a complete overview of all the building styles of the old city center of Amsterdam. Most buildings date back to the 17th century and are small, monumental shops.
Even after 400 years it is still very lively with artisanal businesses, charming bars and restaurants and galleries and a unique offer of specialized and mostly authentic shops. From mishmash to chic, from ethnic to old Dutch, from doll doctor and Spectacles museum to naughty lingerie and bags ‘con amore’. And from old to new, or better said: from antique and vintage to contemporary.
PS A.K.A. Depot Deluxe (website : ps-atelier) is a unique second hand clothing store. It is not just vintage, but has a variety of excellent condition fashion items including clothing, shoes and hand bags. Do not be surprised if you run into designers such as Oscar de la Renta,
and Givenchy side by side brands like Adidas.
“I can resist everything except temptation.” – Oscar Wilde
The owner of the store Johnnie is a “super-chic” lady who really knows her merchandise. You can see the passion in her eyes. Be sure to check out and follow her instagram psdepotdeluxereseller for some fashion inspiration. You never know what you will find on any given day. Johnnie is constantly getting in new items for display and sale. Of special note are the numerous designer shoes and hand bags.
It is a true “treasure hunt,” and you will find so many unique items for both men and women. Johnnie is especially helpful, so do not hesitate to talk with her. Yes, I fell in love with the (limited addition) Keith Haring Adidas high tops. I swear I saw these years ago, and found them “super-cool.” The Givenchy sweat-shirt is as close to “one of a kind” that you get, but at a highly discounted price. It is easy to see how this store has something for everyone and the “hunt” is half the fun, not to mention that high end designer labels can be found at affordable (often cheap) price points.
No issues with credit here, PS A.K.A. Depot Deluxe accepts American Express and all credit cards. Johnnie will even rubber stamp your shopping bag with her logo, before you are on your way.
