MGM Springfield Opens August 24th!
Yes, the day will be finally here. All the battles between the CT tribes and MGM will take on a new look, Springfield will get a rush of new life, and excitement will prevail in New England unlike we have seen in many years. MGM’s digital screen facing Interstate 91 was put together yesterday in anticipation of the opening on August 24, when the entire sign and display will shine for the first time. MGM announced last week that they are now excepting hotel reservations. Details about opening day are now being reported. A procession will begin at 10:30 a.m. downtown and proceed to the entrance, featuring the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales and other surprise entertainment acts. Brockton Casino Still Alive? NOT YET
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has decided to table discussions about the SE casino license once proposed to Rush Gaming in Brockton, MA. It’s been more than two years since the commission, concerned about the specter of an oversaturated gaming landscape, rejected the project. And it’s been nearly that long since a federal district court judge called into question the Interior Department’s 2015 decision to take land into trust for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, including 151 acres in Taunton where the tribe subsequently started — and stopped — building a $1 billion casino. Senator Elizabeth Warren has been pushing for an answer to the litigation, favoring the tribe.
MOHEGAN SUN INTEREST IN JAPAN COMPETES with BIG BOYS
Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, the Mohegan Sun parent, expects to break ground this year on an integrated resort casino project in South Korea. They are now turning their interest towards Japan, competing with Las Vegas Sands Corp., MGM Resorts International, & Wynn Resorts. “Our moves into Asia are both aspirational and transformational for this company,” Kevin Brown, the Mohegan tribal chairman and head of the MGE management board, said in an interview in July. “We’re just outside the bubble those big companies are in, but our Korea investment is our way in. We’ll be open there by the time anything opens in Japan. It’ll give us a foothold in Northeast Asia — separate from Southern Asia, from Macau.”
Twin River Hotel Casino “ABSORBS” Dover Downs
Twin River and Dover Downs announced a merger that will spawn a single, publicly traded company. Dover Downs currently is public, but Twin River is privately owned by a group of six casino investors. Dover Downs expects to bring their sports betting expertise to the party, while Twin River will connect Dover Downs to it’s three other properties – Newport Grand (soon to be moved to TivertonHotel & Casino on Sept. 1st), Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Biloxi, Miss., and Arapahoe Park racetrack in Aurora, Colo.
