Tropicana Atlantic City started giving me a Sunday through Thursday, comped room night a week again and a friend was moving and a couple of us wanted to have a little celebration for him, so I found myself at the new Gilchrist Restaurant in the Chelsea Tower at Tropicana Atlantic City the next morning.
I’ve been to the Gilchrist Restaurant at Gardner’s Basin and have always enjoyed it and was eager to check out a new breakfast place in AC. I consider myself a connoisseur of breakfast food because I really dig it! (Next to try at the Trop is Casa Taco and Tequila Bar for their breakfast, but that is, if I can forgo the table side guacamole. I suppose I could go early in the morning when the guacamole isn’t available and then I could have the guac that evening for dinner—the Bomb!)
The skywalk between the Tropicana and the Chelsea Tower is not complete yet, so you’ve got to walk outside to the Chelsea Tower and to the entrance for Gilchrist Restaurant. The design of the restaurant keeps that old school shore diner feel but is also spacious and clean looking. Between the seating at the counter, the main area and in the back room that overlooks outside seating beside the pool, it’s larger than it looks at first glance and the retro colors and style are really pleasant.
Gilchrist Restaurant is known for their pancakes, but they weigh me down in the morning, so I went with two eggs, over easy with potatoes and toast. The rye toast was excellent but the potatoes were bland and really not that tasty. Unfortunately I did not like the coffee either and after sipping it, I remembered that the coffee at Gardner’s Basin was equally bad. Specifically, it has that fruity aftertaste that is somewhere between bitterness and old coffee.
The service was good and the place is adorable, so I will go to Gilchrist Restaurant again, but will just order differently. The specials on the board looked interesting. I don’t think the prices are cheap, but they are not at the usual casino gouging level either.
Gilchrist Restaurant at Tropicana is a keeper. I’d like to stay in the Chelsea Tower so I look forward to getting a comp room there too.
